In times of great change where cities are getting denser and climate change is impending, the neighborhood of Latina comes to act as a catalyst leading to a better future for cities. Taking Madrid as a stepping stone and adapting to a human-centric approach, the urban fabric of the barrios of Campamento and Las Águilas are proposed to be designed with the ideals of sustainability supporting a healthy lifestyle. These barrios will lead by example setting up prospective living standards for Madrid’s neighborhoods with a strong sense of community and identity.
The design proposal outlines the principles of design to be adapted within the neighborhood that can be implemented across stages of development. After analyzing the existing urban fabric, it was clear that there 3 main strategies needed to be enforced. Firstly, to introduce green spaces at different scales across the neighborhood, secondly to promote and facilitate active mobility and lastly to foster social and economic mix with the development.
Green Catalyst, an amalgamation of sustainable design principles, is the instigator of change in the way we should design our cities. It will start a chain of questioning within the residents and help them decide how people want to live their lives with the ever-evolving world around them.

Project: New green urban district development
Year: 2021
Area: 100,000 sq. m.
Location: Campamento > Las Águilas, Latina, Madrid
Type: Urban planning, infrastructure, public space design
Collaborators: Haidy Lazalde, Kaustubh Zawar, Maia Villanueva
Looking at the current mobility structure, it was clear that the continuing the A5 highway above ground would create more tension on locl mobility network. Thus, continuing the new extension underground until the outer ring of the city is proposed to allow a stronger connection between Campamento & Lás Aguilas.
Surrounding the site on all sides, the green infrastructures lack connection amongst them. Hence to directly connect the Creek Park & South Eastern Parks a ¨Green Belt¨ within the site is proposed.
A - 100m overhead passage from creek park to Casa de Campo
B - Creek Park
C - Green Belt
D - Ground level connection between 3 parks

Building up on the existing mobility network, layers of streets are proposed to establish a hierarchy, control the flow > interconnect Campamento > Lás Aguiilas internally. Through an assortment of street sections, various uses > scenarios are explored to define composition of the streets.

A strip of “Green Belt” is introduced to connect parks on both ends. Sports facilities, play areas, a cultural center > agricultural pockets help foster public interactions. Several other green strategies (as seen below) are also proposed throughout the neighborhood to foster a more sustainable lifestyle.
